The exhibition ‘Remembrar’ (Remembering) is presented at ‘Sculto VI International Contemporary Sculpture Fair’, which takes place from 7 October to 10 October 2021 in Logroño. Represented by the Vanguardia Gallery and directed by Petra Perez Mayo, the exhibition presents sculptures and installations that draw attention to the fragile state of nature and its constant cycle of death and regeneration, in which human beings play a part. The project is subsidised by the Etxepare Basque Institute through a competitive call for proposals. Sculpture Network is collaborating in the fair.
With the idea of nature as a seed for change, metamorphosis and social awareness, works featuring plant and tree seeds were exhibited, such as ‘Refugio Onix’ (2021), ‘Remembrar a Osiris’ (2019) and ‘Aeolia’ (2010), as well as the alabaster and video installation entitled ‘Inanna Isthar’ (2019), a manifesto that reflects this artistic practice developed in nature, prioritising the idea of landscape and action. The pieces address the concepts of time and energy associated with change and entropy in nature.
The incorporation of living, ephemeral and perishable elements such as seeds and flowers collected in a sustainable manner, which decompose over time, bring to the fore the very processes of life, cycles of change and our own transience. They speak of death, but also of the generation of life.
In the rhythmic installation entitled ‘Remembrar a Osiris’ (2019), fragments and seeds come together to re-member life through drawing, photography and sculpture. Surfacing the space with a golden stroke in the work ‘Aeolia’ (2010), golden maple seeds reflect the artist’s collection work in nature. The delicate piece ‘Refugio ónix’ (2021), created with bean shells and onyx, questions the future of the planet in terms of agriculture and food models. On the other hand, ‘Biaizpe’ (2021) refers to the Paso de Dos Hermanas in Navarre, also called bi-aizpe, where two giant rocks dominate the landscape.
The works are based on the value of life before our extinction and offer a poetic and symbolic reflection on this serious problem, which encompasses economic, political and social issues. Consequently, the work process is carried out in a sustainable manner, respecting nature and its fruits, collecting seeds on the edges of the roads before the harvest, and laboriously caring for and drying the harvest.
